About Trewithen Gardens

Explore and be inspired...
Outstanding and internationally renowned, the gardens at Trewithen are a botanical treasure trove featuring a magnificent collection of camellias, magnolias, rhododendrons as well as other famously rare and highly prized plants. Nestled within 30 acres of wonderful woods and parkland, they are one of only 30 gardens in the world to be recognised as an International Camellia Society Garden of Excellence and are RHS recommended.
The Gardens owe their success to George Johnstone, who inherited the Estate in 1904. He sponsored plant hunters who sent back wild collected seeds from far-flung countries like China and the results of these expeditions now thrive at Trewithen over 100 years later.
Central to the gardens is Trewithen House, which has passed down through nearly ten generations of the same family. A tour of the House reveals intimate rooms featuring furniture and art collections of nearly three centuries.
The Gardens are open from the 1st March to the 30th September (Sundays March-May only) each year and the House from the 1st April to the 31st July on Monday and Tuesday afternoons (also August Bank Holiday Monday).
There is also Trewithen’s Plant Centre which sells an extensive range of plants, gardening tools and gifts and the Tea Shop specialises in home cooked fare and caters for morning coffee, light lunches and cream teas.
